EXHIBITION -- SNEAK PREVIEW

[HI-RES PHOTO] -- The `Eureka Stockade 1854' travelling exhibition at Learmonth Historical Society in 1996, one of the many venues throughout Victoria that hosted the exhibition. Public Record Office Victoria was involved also in the earlier 1994 joint exhibition `Eureka 140' with the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery, and with the later joint exhibition, also with the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery,`Eureka -- The First Australian Republic?' exhibition, which toured regional art galleries in three States in 1997.

The catalogue for the `My Heart is Breaking' national touring exhibition features the striking motif of the exhibition, an Aboriginal mother seperated from her children. The photo above (right) was of the launch of the exhibition at the Museum of Victoria on 7 February 1997. Since then the exhibition has been seen at 12 venues in four States. Total visitors so far (late March 1998) have exceeded 150,000. A highlight of the exhibition is Larry Walsh, co-curator and Education Officer of the `My Heart is Breaking' exhibition, whose illuminating talks to schoolchildren, mixed with laughter and sadness, aided the reconciliation process.
The exhibition was a joint project between Public Record Office Victoria and the Koorie Heritage Trust,
in association with Australian Archives (now National Archives) and the Lake Tyers Aboriginal Trust.

One of the `roughs' for the proposed Defending Victoria Exhibition. It is the work of
Melbourne artist, and former advertising executive, David Milne. David was responsible,
with Ian MacFarlane, for the design and layout of the highly successful `My Heart is Breaking'
national touring exhibition in 1997. A set of computerised roughs has been produced.

Additional funding may be required to make this proposed exhibition a reality. There is plenty
of scope for British and Australian organisations to back this vision that will rekindle pride in
Victoria's glorious military and naval past. If you or your organisation can help, contact me now:
