  • Ian Macfarlane is researching the above subjects for an exhibition which will tell the story of Victoria's defences from the first British Regiments and detachments in 1836, and Eureka Stockade (1854) to HMCSS Victoria's part in the First Taranaki War in New Zealand (1860 - 1861); the Victorian Mounted Rifles and other contingents in the Boer War (1899 - 1901); the Victorian Naval Brigade and it's Band to Tientsin, China (1900 - 1901); and the thousands of Victorians (including nurses) who served in World War 1, especially the 4th Regiment of Light Horse at Beersheeba (the last great mounted charge), Victorians at Gallipoli and the bloodbaths of the Western Front. and VC winners. Not forgetting the first shot in WW1 by any allied armies (at Port Philip Heads) and the first action at German New Guinea (Naval Reserve), etc. Information also required about Avenues of Honour.
